Safety and responsibility

The following rules and declaration of responsibility apply to Drammen Klatresenter AS (Klatreverket Strømsø and Klatreverket Åssiden), hereafter called Klatreverket.

General rules

The fall zone is the area below a climber. You must keep a good distance from the fall zone. You are obliged to speak up if you see someone else staying in a climber’s fall zone.

You must always be aware of your surroundings.

Running on the premises and playing on the matresses is strictly prohibited. Climbers who fall and belayers who are disturbed can lead to serious consequences. The noise level must be kept moderate.

If you are 18 years or older, and have a valid belay sertificate, you are allowed to guide 1 other person. You must stay on the floor and back up the break end of the rope properly at all times. Ask us if you are unsure! For bouldering, there are no rules for certification.

We appreciate you asking about things you are unsure about. We are here to help you!

A guardian signs the declaration of responsibility and is responsible for the competence and safety of the minor.

Top rope climbing: Both belayer and climber must have a Top rope belay card or similar.

Lead climbing: Both belayer and climber must have a Brattkort or similar.

NB! A guardian must sign the declaration of responsibility and is responsible for competence and safety.

A guardian must sign the declaration of responsibility and must be present at all times.

Climbers must be secured by an adult.

It is the guardian who is responsible for buddy checks for all types of climbing.

Auto Belay

Everyone who wishes to use an Auto belay must get a safety introduction from one of our employees first. Register at the reception upon arrival, and we will guide you further.

All climbers are responsible for correct clipping and a thorough self check/buddy check.

Everyone who climbs with an Auto belay must have a safety introduction first. This applies regardless of any experience with such machines from other centres.

Lower limit: 15 kg / 34 lbs

Upper limit: 140 kg / 308 lbs

Bouldering

Everyone can boulder at their own risk.

Never walk under someone who is climbing. Keep a good distance from other climbers.

Check that you do not climb into the line of another climber. Be attentive and ask if there are more people waiting.

Be aware when jumping down and practice your falling technique. If necessary, climb down a little before jumping.

Good falling technique: Spot your landing. Keep a shoulder-width distance between your legs. Bend your knees, arms and neck in towards your body. When you land: DO NOT try to catch yourself, but continue the movement by rolling onto your back or side.

No drinking bottles or other hard objects here, please!

Chalk on the hands provides better friction.

Chalk and sweat on the climbing holds make them slippery and bad.

It is good style to brush the holds with a brush, both for yourself and for others.

Borrow a brush from us, or buy your own in our shop.

Rope climbing

It is not permitted to belay other climbers without a belay certificate (Toptaukort/Brattkort or similar).

You are allowed to climb as long as the person belaying you has a belay certificate.

The vast majority of climbing accidents could have been avoided if a proper buddy check had been carried out.

At our gym it is an absolute requirement that you are capable of doing a thorough buddy check when climbing ropes.

«Klatrevettplakaten» is a poster with the most essential rules for rope climbing, made by the norwegian climbing assosiation (NKF). You can find it on the wall in our gym.

Always buddy check – Take a good look at each other before climbing and after each rope change.

Communicate clearly – Give clear messages and clear answers. Always make eye contact before descending!

Never let go of the brake grip – Always have a closed grip around the brake rope, regardless of which belay device is being used.

The Norwegian «Topptaukort» allowes you to belay on pre hanged top ropes.

To us, it doesn’t matter if you required your Belay Certificate in a different country as long as you belay safely. Be safe!

Klatreverket’s climbing guard can refuse you to belay if you behave irresponsibly.

The Norwegian «Brattkort» allowes you to belay a climber on lead.

To us, it doesn’t matter if you required your Belay Certificate in a different country as long as you belay safely. Be safe!

Klatreverket’s climbing guard can refuse you to belay if you behave irresponsibly.

You can belay on our lowest walls (up to 10 meters), provided you

  • have attended an approved course recently
  • assess that you are able to check the climbing equipment, to do the correct buddy check and belay properly
